New gay films wanted; old gay films catalogued

In 1991, Heidi Leiter created quite a stir in Manassas, Virginia when she took her girlfriend Missy Peters to her high school prom. The story of these two courageous teenage lesbians is being retold in More Than Friends: The Coming Out of Heidi Leiter, the first 1994 episode of the HBO docudrama series, Life Stories: Families in Crisis. Elise Harris, in the April issue of Out magazine, reports that Leiter is pleased with HBO's portrayal of their story saying, "It's very accurate, and some of the lines are very good, very strong." In More Than Friends, Heidi Leiter is portrayed by Sabrina Lloyd while Kate Anthony plays Missy Peters.

Comedian Lois Bromfield came out of the closet when she was a guest on the Arsenio Hall Show a few weeks ago. Bromfield, whose sister Val'rie was one of Sandra Bernhard's ex-lovers, is married to a gay man living with AIDS.

If you didn't get a chance to show WVIZ Channel 25 you appreciate them for broadcasting In the Life by calling in a membership pledge when the show was being broadcast, it's not too late. Remember, viewer interest is a major factor when the station makes its decisions about purchasing independent programs for broadcast. A WVIZ spokesman during the pledge drive indicated that viewer response was evenly divided over the station's carrying In the Life. Call in a pledge to 398-2800. By the way, thanks to all of you who called in your pledges to the WRUW 91.1 FM telethon which carries our own GayWaves show.

The Call and Post printed a statement by

'I don't do Magic Johnson jokes

and I don't do

gaybashing'

-Thea Vidale

Representative Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, on the uproar over remarks about whites, Jews and gays made by Nation of Islam minister Khallid Abdul Mohammed at Kean College of New Jersey. In the statement Mfume said that the Caucus considered the remarks "evil and vicious" and said that they were, "remarks that I have found since the beginning to be racist, sexist, antiSemitic, anti-Catholic and homophobic."

Also in the Call and Post, feature editor Shelly M. Shockley wrote a report on Thea Vidale, stand up comic and star of the ABC sitcom Thea who brought her act to the Palace Theater a few weeks ago. Instead of the comedy her character does in the sitcom, Vidale said that she tells the truth about "racism, homophobia and a lot of stuff that needs to be talked about." Vidale went on to say, "the only thing I don't do jokes about is AIDS, there's nothing funny about it. I don't do Magic Johnson jokes and I don't do gaybashing."
